KOffice

KOffice 2 is a free, integrated office suite, designed and developed by members of the KDE community. It is currently in beta status and not ready for daily use yet.

  • Fast, lightweight and extensible through well documented APIs
  • Combines productivity with creativity.
  • Good ODF support in all applications
  • Consistent and portable; KOffice 2 runs on all major platforms, including Linux (KDE and Gnome), Mac OS X and Windows and Maemo.

"KOffice has a small number of developers. We rely on the best toolkit we can get to develop such an ambitious project. This is why we build on Qt."

KOffice and Qt

KOffice LogoWhen the KOffice developers ported to Qt 4, it presented them the opportunity to completely redesign the user interface and underlying infrastructure, thereby making  KOffice 2 a highly innovative office suite.

Qt has enabled KOffice 2 to run on all major platforms, including Linux (both KDE and Gnome), Maemo, Windows and Mac OS X.

By using Qt's Scribe Classes, the KOffice developers were able to build a mature text renderer which is used consistently throughout the whole suite and adds complete text-editing functionality to every application, including those handling graphic content.

KOffice 2 makes broad use of Dockers (freely drag-able menus) provided by the QDockWidget which contain the specifc toolsets for every editing action the user takes.
