Pimp My Widgets Developer Contest

We Have a Winner!

Yeah Yeah Yeah! After putting in two and a half months of pimpin', developers from around the world submitted all manner of pimped out, blingin' widgets to the first ever Pimp My Widgets developer contest.  Entries were judged based on five criteria:

  • Best Use of Qt
  • Usefulness
  • Coding Creativity
  • Portability
  • Bling Factor

Check out the winning entries!

Grand Prize Winner

The pimpin' was intense, but in the end one widget emerged victorious.  Jukka-Pekka Maakelaa with his totally pimped out QuickCalendarView has earned himself a Segway i2 Personal Transporter.

QuickCalendarView

Jukka-Pekka Maakelaa

Description
Jukka-Pekka's entry provides a flexible way to browse calendars.  Subclassing QGraphicsView - Qt's powerful 2D graphics canvas - the QuickCalendarView scales easily to fit different screen resolutions from desktop to devices.  This intuitive widget provides three ways to determine visible timespan, toggles quickly between day and month view, and provides intuitive ways to view information on appointments.  All in all, a totally pimped-out calendar.

Runners Up

The runners up demonstrated some strong pimpin' skills, and the bling factor was definitely up there.  These three lucky winners are walking away with Nokia N810 Internet Tablets, for hackin' purposes -- not to mention the satisfaction that comes with a job pimpingly done.

WebCarousel

Matt Broadstone

Description
Matt's entry replaces the tab bar on a simple web browser with a Web Page Carousel. It relies highly on QGraphicsView to provide the actual carousel, as well as QtWebKit to provide the actual web content. It also uses a slightly modified version of FaderWidget, available under the GPL, for a little extra bling.  WebCarousel is a cool new way to browse the web.

Source code provided under the GPL v2.0.

AnalogPad

Kaj Groenholm

Description
Kaj's AnalogPad is basically a 5-way navigation widget with analog behaviour instead of normal digital on/off keys.  It's designed to be used with a touchscreen, and is suitable for games and other applications where an analog 5-way navigator works better than panning/flicking the screen directly.  AnalogPad provides an API for theming by changing animation speed and colours, and runs on a Nokia N810 for extra cross-platform bling.

Source code provided under the GPL v3.0.

Clocks

Thomas Moenicke

Description
Thomas' entry let's users know what time it is with a collection of blingin' clocks.  A simple clock, star digital clock, world clock and astronomical clock of Prague are all based on QtGraphicsView, with some pimped out animation and hover effects thrown in. Beautiful graphics put the finishing touches on this elegant entry.

Source code provided under the GPL v3.0.
